Author Guidelines

Journal of Pharmacy and Halal Studies (JPHS) is a double-blind, peer-reviewed, open-access journal that publishes scholarly works advancing pharmaceutical sciences, pharmacy practice, and halal assurance across the full life cycle of medicines and pharmaceutical products (discovery, development, manufacturing, quality control, distribution, and patient use). The journal particularly welcomes research that bridges pharmaceutical rigor with halal assurance (e.g., halal-compliant formulation/processing, analytical verification, traceability, and supply-chain integrity).

1) Manuscript Categories

  • Original Research Articles (experimental, analytical, clinical/community, technological, quality assurance, halal assurance-related studies)
  • Review Articles (narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses)

Other article types (e.g., short communications, technical notes, letters) may be considered at the Editor’s discretion.

2) Before You Submit

2.1 Scope Fit

Please ensure your manuscript fits JPHS focus and scope, including one or more of the following areas: pharmacology/toxicology, pharmacognosy/phytochemistry, pharmaceutics/pharmaceutical technology, pharmaceutical analysis/medicinal chemistry, pharmaceutical microbiology/biotechnology, natural product development, clinical and community pharmacy, pharmaceutical biology, pharmacochemistry, biopharmaceutics, traditional medicine/herbal studies, and halal medicine/pharmaceuticals.

2.2 Research Integrity and Publication Ethics

JPHS expects all stakeholders (authors, reviewers, editors) to follow high standards of publication ethics and research integrity, including originality, accurate reporting, transparent disclosures, and responsible authorship. JPHS applies ethics principles consistent with international publication ethics practice and COPE-aligned processes.

2.3 Authorship Criteria

Authorship should be limited to contributors who meet recognized authorship criteria (substantial contribution, drafting/revising, final approval, and accountability). Authors should agree on author order and ensure that all eligible contributors are appropriately credited. (See ICMJE authorship criteria.)

2.4 Prior Publication and Exclusivity

  • Submissions must be original, not previously published, and not under consideration elsewhere.
  • Any related manuscripts (including preprints, conference abstracts, or overlapping datasets) must be disclosed at submission.

2.5 Similarity Screening

JPHS may screen manuscripts for similarity and may request clarifications and supporting materials if overlap, redundant publication, or integrity concerns are identified.

3) Submission Process (OJS)

Manuscripts must be submitted through the JPHS online submission system. Ensure all metadata fields are completed accurately (title, abstract, keywords, author details, affiliations, ORCID where available).

3.1 Required Files

  • Blinded Manuscript (for double-blind review): no author names/affiliations, no acknowledgments, no funding/COI statements that reveal identity, and remove identifying information from file properties.
  • Title Page (separate file): full title; all authors’ names, affiliations, ORCID (optional but recommended), corresponding author email; author contributions (recommended); funding statement; conflict of interest statement.
  • Figures (separate files if requested/needed by the system), plus tables (embedded or separate as editable tables).
  • Supplementary Material (optional): datasets, protocols, checklists, extended tables/figures.
  • Ethics Documentation (when applicable): ethics approval details, informed consent statements, trial registration, animal ethics approval.

3.2 Submission Preparation Checklist

  • Manuscript matches JPHS scope and is prepared for double-blind review.
  • All references are complete and formatted in IEEE style.
  • Figures/tables are numbered, titled, and cited in-text.
  • Ethics approval, consent, and safety/hazard statements are included when relevant.
  • Funding and competing interests are disclosed.
  • Data availability statement is provided (recommended; required where relevant).

4) Manuscript Preparation

4.1 Language

Manuscripts must be written in clear, professional English or Indonesia. Authors are encouraged to use professional language editing where needed.

4.2 File Format

Submit the manuscript in an editable format (preferred: .DOC/.DOCX or .RTF). Use standard fonts and consistent formatting.

4.3 Article Structure (Recommended)

  • Title (concise, informative)
  • Abstract (150–250 words; recommended structured form: Background/Objectives, Methods, Results, Conclusion)
  • Keywords (3–6 terms)
  • Introduction
  • Materials and Methods (sufficient detail for reproducibility)
  • Results
  • Discussion (interpretation, comparison to literature, limitations)
  • Conclusion
  • Acknowledgments (in non-blinded version only)
  • Funding and Conflict of Interest (in non-blinded version only)
  • Data Availability Statement (recommended/required where relevant)
  • References (IEEE style)

4.4 Units, Nomenclature, and Drug/Material Identification

  • Use SI units and internationally accepted nomenclature.
  • Use generic drug names where possible; if brand names are used, include manufacturer and country on first mention.
  • For chemicals, reagents, and biological materials: provide grade/purity, supplier/manufacturer, and catalog/lot numbers when relevant.
  • For natural products/herbal materials: report authentication methods, voucher specimen (if applicable), extraction/standardization details, and quality control parameters.

4.5 Figures and Tables

  • Number figures and tables sequentially and cite each in the text.
  • Provide clear captions and define all abbreviations in captions/footnotes.
  • Images should be high quality; avoid inappropriate image enhancement/manipulation.

4.6 Halal-Related Reporting (When Applicable)

For manuscripts making halal-related claims, authors must ensure the claims are evidence-based and clearly scoped. Describe ingredients/material origin, processing aids, critical control points, contamination risks, traceability measures, and supporting evidence (e.g., analytical verification, documentation, or certification context where relevant).

5) Reporting Standards (Strongly Recommended)

To improve completeness and transparency, JPHS encourages authors to follow established reporting guidelines appropriate to the study type, for example:

  • CONSORT for randomized clinical trials
  • STROBE for observational studies
  • PRISMA for systematic reviews and meta-analyses

Authors may upload relevant checklists as supplementary files where appropriate.

6) Ethics, Safety, and Disclosures

6.1 Human Participants

Human studies must state the name of the approving ethics committee and approval/consent number, confirm informed consent where applicable, and protect participant confidentiality.

6.2 Animal Studies

Animal studies must state animal ethics approval details and confirm compliance with relevant animal welfare standards.

6.3 Clinical Trial Registration

Clinical trials should be registered in an appropriate public registry and the registration identifier should be reported in the manuscript.

6.4 Conflicts of Interest and Funding

All authors must disclose financial and non-financial competing interests and report all funding sources and the role of funders (if any).

6.5 Use of AI-Assisted Tools

AI tools may be used only to support language editing or formatting and must not replace authors’ intellectual contributions or accountability. Any material use of AI tools that affects writing, analysis, figure generation, or interpretation should be transparently disclosed.

7) Peer Review

JPHS uses a double-blind peer review process. Submissions are screened for completeness and scope fit, may undergo similarity/integrity checks, and are typically reviewed by at least two independent reviewers. Editorial decisions are based on scholarly merit, methodological robustness, ethical compliance, and relevance to JPHS scope.

8) Open Access, Copyright, License, and APCs
